Sarawak Heritage Society will be having an exhibition during Building Trade Show on 26th-29th March 2009 at the Permata Carpark.

Remember your last assignment for Arch Design 252?

A major part of the exhibition will concern the old markets. Exactly the scope of your project site for Arch Design 252 final project.

So, CONGRATULATIONS! Your beautiful and painstakingly crafted models will get to come out of those cobweb-ridden storeroom, to see daylight again and be displayed again!!!

Please prepare your model to be displayed PROFESSIONALLY!!! ... which means make sure you display your school logo, with group members name on a card to be attached to your group models. Please coordinate your 3 group name cards to be standardised.

Get ready to move and set up your model there on Tuesday 24th March 2009 afternoon!!! Bring your presentation panels as well, we'll see how to fit it in.

Call me if you run into difficulties. (i.e. your model had been eaten by your dog or abducted by space aliens)

architectural sketches

let me i introduce to you, Ricardo Massucatto. a dude whom i got to know with from Deviantart.com.

first thing first he is NOT an architect. he's a painter from brazil. he's not actually an architecture artist or anything but most of his painting/artwork are quiet interesting that i wanted to share it with my classmates.

most of his sketches involve outdoors where there are lots of human figure and rows of buildings. some are well painted artwork and some are just simple sketches.

an artwork doesn't always have to be full of colours.

a black and white drawing can bring it's own statement as well.

there are a lot of style of sketches you could try on. every one have their own signature style.
what i like about his artwork is the way he draw his human figure =) like this image below.

of course there are a lot of ways to do your sketches : from marker rendering to a plain black and white sketches, with some shadowing using pencils to a simple water colour rendering. but the most important of all, never forget to write simple note that could help u revise back to the sketches that you have drawn.

and oh ya, never forget your human figure. remember that it helps a lot in figuring the size of a building or a space.

If you are architecture students you've probably experienced:

-the taste of wood glue
-changes in your vocabulary: homework to project, ball to sphere, etc
-you don't understand how somebody can spend less than $20 at the supplies store
-you hate people telling you "go to sleep" or "do you still have a lot of work?"
-your friends and you don't have the same concept of work "oh, well do it right before class"
-you've slept more than 20 straight hours on weekends
-you can easily discuss with authority the effects of caffeine on different drinks
-no matter the effort you put in a project, somebody will always say “why don’t you add this�? or “why don’t you change this here�? or “i think that…but…yeah, its ok�?
-you’ve heard all your ipod songs in a week
-you aren’t seen in public without bags under your eyes
-whenever you get invited somewhere, it is followed by “or do you have a lot of homework?�?
-you’ll dance ymca with a choreography without a drop of alcohol in your system
-you write down a quick message with rapidographs, lead holders, markers and ink
-you constantly make up excuses for courses that are not design related why you didn’t do your work
-you have more pictures of landscapes and places than of people
-your worst nightmare consists of not finishing a project

gambier street on 8 nov of 2008...

a SAD history -- 5 shophouses at Gambier Street destroyed by fire on 8 nov 2008:

ANOTHER LOST FOR OUR HERITAGE VALUE!!!

Five century-old two-storey shophouses at Gambier Street were destroyed by fire. The fire was believed to have started from one of the retail shops at about 5.00 pm after its main switch exploded during a lightning strike.The fire actually spread very fast even though it was raining heavily as the partition wall of these old shophouses is made of timber... The fire destroyed two textileshops, two hardware shops and a dental clinic... one of it is JxxKwxxx optical..

However (luckily...) there are no injuries or loss of lives were reported.. hope they will take some actions to renovate or upgrade/*conserve.. the shophouses (**without spoil the heritage value of gambier street.of course...)because it is really old and also not to forget to upgrade the bomba facilities at that area!!!

LUCKILY we did take lots of photos..haha!!!

the objectives of this assignment are to understand urban scale and the program of a public building, in context with the site concerned, with due consideration to surrounding buildings, facilities and possible future proposals at adjacent sites.

things to be highlight : 1. conservation 2. urban planning 3. public building.

and this are the outcome of what my group have done :

Although the site consists of abandoned public buildings, it was formerly full of that excites all sense, it brings lots of memories for the Kuching community. This project allows us to explore the possibility of "Conservation for Adaptive Reuse", with these buildings of Cultural Heritage Value. <---- ~~lol copy paste from the assignment brief.~~

Grand happy Birthday to Our new Blog! STUDIOLESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After a hard time in deciding the name for this blog, we finally came out with this name, Studioless. Lol.

Ok. Now we are having our final. Which is Urban revival. The regarding site that we have been given is the Vegetable market, Fish market, Garment store Bazaar, Government office, and as well as the poultry market, all situated at Gambier Street Kuching.

It is a real sad moment when a distinct part of our Brooke heritage is torn down. It has immense aesthetic values, it is elegant in its own way and without history, who are we to know our past? The past serves as a reminder, to tell us where we came from, so that we can see how far we have come. To destroy history is akin to sacrilege.

NSTKUCHING:
The former Gambier Street wet market, one of the city's old colonial-era buildings, will be torn down as it is purportedly unsafe, officials said. The market, which comprised a poultry, fish and former pork market, would be demolished, said Kuching City North mayor Abang Mohamad Atei Medaan.
Abang Mohamad Atei said the market was closed on June 15 but the 73-year-old building could not be saved and preserved as a historical site. He said the state Public Works Department, which carried out the assessment on the market's structure, had found it unsafe and recommended to city hall not to preserve the building. The date for the demolition has not been set.
The Sarawak Heritage Society (SHS) had earlier urged authorities to preserve the market for its "outstanding" heritage value. SHS president Mike Boon argued that if the market was preserved, it could have been incorporated into the design of the esplanade that would be built on the site of the market's location. This is because the esplanade would stretch from Jalan Gambier to the Ban Hock Wharf, and possibly link up with the popular Kuching waterfront. Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud's vision of the esplanade is a scenic recreational place that has "lots of trees".

To know it before gone, we’ll go down one by one, we’ll start off with the vegetable market.

The old Vegetable market at the current site appeared in an early map sketch of old Kuching in 1870. Also in this map was an earlier fish market opposite Tua Pek Kong temple. This earlier fish market moved to the present site. The old Vegetable market next to Pangkalan Batu was shown in a painting done in 1864 by Frederick Boyle titled "A Fort at Pangkalan Batu". This wooden fort with a pyramid shaped roof was later replaced by the Square Tower in 1879. The earliest known photograph of Kuching taken in 1864 shows the market to the right of this timber fort. Another photo taken in 1905 clearly shows the Old Courthouse, Square Tower, Old Prison next to the Square Tower (since demolished) and the Old Markets.

The fish market dates from the 1880's. In 1927 an extension to the fish market which gave it's present front look towards Gambier Street was made. This plan (PWD Drawing No. C19-2, Kuching 18th Aug, 1927) is still in the JKR archive room. Previously the front and back of the Fish Market were the same. If you view the fish market from the opposite bank it looks very different. You will see all the European style cathedral arches that were covered up on the street side. These are still there but you have to go inside the building to see it cause what was originally on the outside became part of the inside due to the renovation works which extended the roof on the street side as a flat roof line. It is the ONLY colonial building with such cathedral style arches! The wooden vegetable market we see today dates to 1935. NOT the fish market! It's much earlier and more important historically!

If u have a chance of visiting there, notice the piece of land, a little garden just next to the fish market. It is actually the pork market, but unluckily, it has been destroyed by fire in the year 2002.
Going further down Gambier Street, u would come to a long abandoned building. It is previously a Government Office. In 1878, Charles Brooke( the second Rajah) decreed that a collection be started with the view of creating a museum. This building was used as the First Museum Storage and Exhibition galleries in 1889, while awaiting a new Sarawak Museum proper to be completed(presently along Jalan Tun Abg Haji Openg). The collection was displayed for the first time to the general public in 1889 in this building. All the artefacts were eventually relocated to the museum Buildin(1891). Since the british colonial period till the present time, many government departments have occupied this building.

The poultry market dates to 1959. Followed by Garment Store Bazaar. This 3-storey building was once used primarily for the storage of antimony ores, a mineral that was among the primary export of Sarawak even before the arrival of James Brooke in 1839. Although originally a 2 storey warehouse(pre-1929), through the years it had undergone many renovations. The wharf behing this building facilitated the export trade as small boats woukld ferry the ores down fro the Sarawak River here before transferring to ocean going boats. When the antimony trade ceased in 1877, other items like gutta percha(latex from ‘nyatoh tree’, a local hardwood), Gambier, rubber and pepper were also traded in the 1890.

Due to the announcement of demolition of all the buildings around the Gambier Street, hundreds of hawkers and shop owners are forced to move out of this place without further a due. If not, it has been clearly stated that the authorities will take action to those who didnt obey.

Because of this, not only the hawkers are in trouble but also the citizens of Kuching will face troubles. Maybe some will feel that the current location of the market which is in Stutong is strategic, but it is quite sure that most of the Kuching citizens don like it. From wat we can c, after the switch or the move, Citizens from opposite river cant get their food supplies on the part of the land. Business around Gambier dropped due to less amount of people around that area. It is not as busy as before.

Thus, this is our job to have a good proposal on Urban Rivival. Making full use of the building, conserve it and add functions into it to revive the past atmosphere.

So, It would be good, if u can drop some opinions on how to revive the area, avoiding all the possible problems.
